Manchester United are deliberating over the possibility of reintroducing a
ladies’ football team and new manager David Moyes is understood to have been
instrumental in the decision by the club to reconsider.
While the other heavyweights of English football - Manchester City,
Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton - all boast highly performing womens’
teams, United have not had a ladies’ side since 2005, when club bosses decided
to concentrate their funds on youth development instead.
At present, United’s only contribution to women’s football is allowing
girls access to the club’s community coaching scheme up until the age of 18.
Sportsmail understands that as recently as last year, United had little intention of
relaunching a women’s side.
However, new boss David Moyes is understood to be a huge advocate of
women’s football, with his own daughter on the books of Preston North
End.
Equally, Moyes’ former club Everton have been one of the leading pioneers
in efforts to boost the profile of the women’s game and Sportsmail understands
that Moyes is eager to continue that legacy at Old Trafford
In May, Moyes visited the Cambridge Union, where he spoke passionately
about his views of the women’s game and Sportsmail can
exclusively reveal that the United manager is willing to back any initiatives
to support the future of ladies’ football.
‘I think ladies football is getting better and stronger all the time,’
Moyes said, just days after accepting the United job, ‘My daughter plays for
Preston North End girls so I am really keen on it.
