FIFA President Sepp Blatter said that after two players were caught during the tournament earlier this month, FIFA tested the rest of the North Korean squad and found that three more tested positive.

"This is a shock," Blatter told a news conference. "You can hear this emotion in my voice."

The last doping case at a major event came at the men's 1994 World Cup in the United States, when Diego Maradona was kicked out after testing positive for stimulants.

Colombia's reserve goalkeeper Yineth Varon has meanwhile been suspended for failing an out-of-competition test just before the World Cup after undergoing hormonal treatment.

FIFA has already met with a North Korean delegation, the source said, and heard arguments that the steroids were accidentally taken with traditional Chinese medicines based on musk glands that were used to treat players struck by lightning on June 8 during a training camp.

The case will now be taken up by FIFA's disciplinary committee. Blatter said the federation had already apologized.

Defenders Song Jong Sun and Jong Pok Sim tested positive for steroids after North Korea's first two group games and were suspended for the last match. The team was eliminated in the first round after losses to the United States and Sweden and a draw with Colombia.

Duas jogadoras da Coreia do Norte suspensas por doping

Mais duas jogadoras, desta vez da Coreia do Norte, falharam no teste de anti-doping e foram, por isso, proibidas de actuar no jogo de quarta-feira contra a Colômbia.

(CNN) -- World football's governing body FIFA announced Thursday that two players from the North Korea side have been provisionally suspended from the Women's World Cup after failing dope tests.

Jong Sun Song and Sim Pok Jong were prevented from playing in the tournament being held in Germany prior to their team's Group C tie against Colombia in Bochum yesterday.

FIFA said in a statement that adverse "analytical findings" were present in "A" samples collected in two anti-doping tests conducted after the team's previous matches.

The statement continued: "In accordance with article 58 of the FIFA Anti-Doping Regulations ... the whole Korea DPR team was required by FIFA to undergo an anti-doping test after yesterday's match between Korea DPR and Colombia. The target testing of the entire Korea DPR team was coordinated with WADA [World Anti-Doping Agency]."

North Korea drew 0-0 with Colombia in their third and final game at the event in which they failed to score a goal; previous defeats to Sweden and the USA consigning the team to an early exit.
